Classes!
I got to register for classes last week. It took awhile, considering that it took me about a month and a half to finally get my immunization records from my old pediatrician in Maryland. (They sent them after I first called, but they got lost in the mail, so...)

I feel pretty good about my schedule.

Calculus III - Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday: 9:10AM - 10:05 AM

Quantitative Analysis - Monday, Wednesday, Friday: 10:20AM - 11:15AM

Quantitative Analysis Lab - Wednesday: 12:45PM - 3:45PM

Organismal Biology - Tuesday, Thursday: 3:55PM - 5:15PM

Organismal Biology Lab - Wednesday: 5:30PM - 7:30PM

I'm also registered for a second Calculus III class, but I'm on the waitlist. It's 11:30AM - 12:30 AM, which would be a lot nicer than 9. So hopefully one person will drop and I'll be able to get in. But honestly, after having to fight traffic for half an hour to get to Calculus at 8AM last semester, having a 9AM class on campus isn't bothering me too much. I considered taking Calculus on Tuesday/Thursday from 5:30-7:30, but having a 3+ hour block of class at that time of the day just seemed awkward to me. (I also had the foresight to check RateMyProfessor and was not enthused by that particular option... although I don't know who will be teaching the one I am registered for yet.)

I may be stuck with the 9AM even if someone does drop, depending on how joining one of the chorus groups works out. The Concert Choir meetings would conflict, if I end up doing that. But that will depend on how auditions go, and what my options are (Concert Choir, Chamber Choir, Tenor/Bass Chorale). I might even get a scholarship out of it. (I really hope so, because nothing else seems to be coming.)

That comes to a total of 12 credits, with 12.5 or 13 if I do a choir. It's also pretty flexible in that, if I decide not to double minor in Math and Biology after all, I'll be able to use all the credits. (Instead of going for math minor, the Calculus course would be my non-major/minor science credit.)

I would also need all those classes if, for some reason, I decided to switch from Chemistry to Chemical Engineering. I don't think I will, but it's been sounding tempting again. I kind of go back and forth between "I'm sure I don't want to do chemical engineering," and "But what if I'm wrong and it is what I want to do.

In other news, I got the first season of Alias on DVD, so I've really been enjoying watching it again. I also went ahead and ordered the second season. (I've already got the fourth.) Yay for spending money I probably shouldn't. I'm trying to make it last and not totally binge, but it's hard.

In addition to that, and Death Note (which I'm in the middle of), I watched the first couple episodes of Dexter from Netflix, after having a conversation about it this morning. It's pretty interesting so far; I'll probably keep going with it.

Electra Townie 21

Today I finally got my new bike out again, took it to the trail by the lake, and took a ride. I got it last month; Grandmother sent me a $500 check so that I could get a new bike for graduation. I hadn't planned on getting one right away, but went in to the local bike shop a few days later to look around (again) and ended up walking out with it. Stuff like the bike rack and helmet actually put me over budget, but I'm glad I made the investment. It's an awesome, comfortable bike that should last me a very long time. It's not particularly suited to off-road mountain biking, but that's alright by me.

Part of the reason I was looking for a bike is because UAH is a pretty bike-friendly campus--there are bikes everywhere. I'm actually worried that I might not be able to take the new one due to not having proper storage. Storing it inside my apartment would be best, but of course that's not allowed. Next time I'm in Huntsville I'll have to check out the covered (but not walled) storage area to make sure it will be dry enough and have something to lock the bike to.

I wish I could ride into town from home, but I am not going to navigate between the traffic and parked cars and trucks (!) on the causeway. I'm not very experienced biking in traffic as it is.

So anyway, I had a great ride this afternoon: hot and sunny, but not miserable, and I was finished well before I had any idea that it was going to thunderstorm. The loop of the trail I was on is about 3mi; I went around 3 times for a total of 9mi. (I didn't know the distance until I looked it up just now.)

Yay exercise! I really need to get back into going to the gym--I've skipped nearly 2 months--but today the outdoors won out. I'll probably be sore tomorrow anyway. It's odd--I've noticed that it was easier to make it to the gym when I was at school from 8-5 than when I've got a completely open schedule. Motivational inertia, I suppose.

Wow, this entry is so much more coherent than my last. Due in part, I'm sure, to the fact that I'm done with Will Rogers Follies and won't have to spend 10 hours at the theater for a good while. I miss it, though. We had a lot of fun. I won't miss having the music stuck in my head... In a month or two or seven whenever that happens.

I'm really starting to get excited about the fall semester now.

Bit by bit I'm doing some of the things I need to get done before then. I'm still waiting on the immunization records that I requested over a month ago--the second set should be on it's way to me now, and I hope that this one doesn't get lost in the mail. Once I get those I can actually register for classes.

Yet to go:
  • Register with disability support services, just in case (requiring, of course, a letter from my doctor)

  • Academic advisement, registration

  • Transfer orientation

  • Get updated on vaccinations (I'm sure I at least need a booster of something)

  • Get wisdom teeth taken out. Joy.

  • Get furnishings and other stuff, pack, etc etc etc

In addition to, you know, getting into the classes I need at decent times, I want to register ASAP so that I can get a UAH email address and join the Facebook network. Hah.

Livejournal emailed me this morning to tell me that my birthday is coming up...
Gotta be at the theater in about 50 minutes. Been awake for 40. Today is our last day of performing Will Rogers Follies. For those of you keeping score, that's the same play we did last summer. There's a Annual Will Rogers Heritage Festival, you see.

I really didn't think that doing the show again would be as much fun as it has been, but we've had a great time. I'm definitely getting tired at this point, though. We've had five performances since Wednesday (not to mention rehearsals Saturday-Tuesday) and we've got two more today.

I got my room assignment for school in the fall, and found one of my roommates on Facebook. I think it's actually starting to sink in that I'm actually going away to college in a couple months. I really should get started on all the stuff I have to do before then, like academic advisement and whatnot.

I wonder how long I'll have Will Rogers Follies music stuck in my head this time? It's been a daily presence for the last month or so.

Friday: Calculus Final

Tomorrow: Physics Final

Today: Misplace calculator

I think I know where I left it, though--I just hope it'll be there when I check tomorrow. I really don't want to have to replace that, because graphing calculators are freaking expensive. And I'm used to it. I've got a spare calculator but (guess what!) I can't find it either. I also can't find the one book I actually want to sell back to the bookstore tomorrow.

Oddly enough, the best news I've had today is that I get to take my Calculus II final early. See, it's scheduled for Monday at 8AM, after which I would have my Organic Chem. final at 10:30. My Calculus teacher had us all take a vote on when we wanted to take our finals, since she knew that some people had Chemistry and Physics finals on Monday. Overall no one was that interested in changing the final (noooo!), but she left the option open for us to take it Friday at 9AM (yay!). So that's what I'll do.

It's awesome because:
A. It's at 9 instead of 8. It's practically sleeping in! (Even if I usually do that Fridays anyway...)
B. I don't have it hanging over my head all weekend.
C. Ideally, I'll be significantly less braindead on Monday after my last final. (In theory.)

I'll be graduating next Friday... So weird!

It can't be March, can it?
For some reason I've been reading through old LJ entries again. It's always a horrifying experience, especially back five and six years ago. But I've found some interesting little gems. Like when [info]abiona used to sign entries and comments with "-Miel." (My life is forfeit now.)

I also found this, from a conversation about what would happen if the battle songs from Revolutionary Girl Utena were dubbed into English:

[11/05/ - 21:39] [info]shoten: A chair! A chair in the middle of the room it SITS and STANDS and ROCKS itSELF!!! ACHAIRACHAIRACHAIRACHAIR BEWAAAAAAAAAAAARE!!!

---

I've been lazy this weekend. In fact, I've been lazy on the weekends in general. But considering I had a two-hour-and-twenty-minute-long Organic Chemistry test this week, I probably deserve it. O-Chem is hard... but I like it too. Yes, I know that makes me insane in a very special way.

---

It's funny--I update so sporadically these days. And to think back in the summer of 2003 I was updating every day and I'd write something to the effect of "I haven't updated in forever!!" if I hadn't posted for three or four days.

Reading them in rapid succession makes me think: how could I write about cleaning my room so often, and yet still have such a messy room? Of course, as I write this... I'm thinking that I do need to clean up some.

---

We'll be starting rehearsals for Will Rogers Follies (again) before too long. I'm looking forward to being involved at the theater again. Some things with casting didn't go exactly as I expected. I was angry for awhile; now I'm ok. I bear some responsibility for things not working out as I had thought. But I'm going to enjoy it anyway.

---

Le sigh. I just remembered everything that I need to do tomorrow.

Missing Christmas break, but kind of glad to have a life again.
Man, I haven't updated all year. :p

I intended to do the usual year-in-review/looking ahead post around New Year's, but I didn't. 2007 was (much like 2006) a year in which I did not update very much. I'd like to write more this year, but I don't think I'll make any promises.

'07 was an interesting year: three full-time semesters (and actually feeling like a college student since high school was finally entirely behind me), a week in the hospital followed by IVs in January, a "real job," and being largely an observer at the theater and not a participant.

2008 looks to be pretty exciting. I'll be graduating from Snead. I'll be enrolling at UAH and living on my own (!!!!). I'm getting in shape--yes, believe it or not, I've been working out again. Granted, I started that in September and have been doing it on-and-off since then, but December was largely off, so to a small extent I'm starting over now. I'm excited though, since I've found a good strength training program that I'm actually enjoying. It's hard, but I'm enjoying the challenge.

I'm also participating in 365 at Flickr. That's been another challenge--actually taking the time to take pictures every day--but also enjoyable. Day ten so far (having started late) with nine shots (since I missed a day).

So check out my 365 set!.

I should go to bed soon. Waking up early isn't bothering me so much; I can deal with the morning taking a small eternity. But what's driving me nuts is having to go to bed so early. By 9:30 I'm thinking "I need to go to bed soon. I don't have time to do anything else," which sucks. But that's life, huh?

Homestretch
Three finals down. One to go.

Western Civ. final was actually a little more difficult than I figured. Because... well, I forgot to study the map, and worse, I forgot to do the assigned text reading. Whoops. The map part wasn't terrible because I do have a pretty decent grasp of world geography, but there were a couple questions that were ambiguous (like the number that was placed right between Iraq and Saudi Arabia). As for the few questions based on the textbook, I just guessed.

I'm not worried though, because according to my calculations, I think I could have not shown up for the final and still pulled a high B if not an A.

Today's Chemistry final went a lot better than I thought--it wasn't as hard as our last test. Challenging, yes, but definitely more manageable. And that only leaves Physics tomorrow, and for some reason I'm not concerned about that at all. I've studied everything for the chapter and I feel very well prepared.

That actually makes me a little nervous...

As for Meet Me in St. Louis, I did audition, but I didn't get a part. I had indicated that I wasn't sure if I'd accept a chorus part, and that I was primarily interested in one of the three main young male leads, so I'm guessing that's why they didn't offer. During auditions it was pretty obvious who was going to be cast in a couple of the parts. I thought maybe I had a shot at the third, but no such luck. For awhile I debated calling and offering to take a chorus part, but in the end I decided that with my spring semester schedule that I didn't have the justification as a chorus member to spend that much time right now. Ah well, maybe next time.

It's audition time for Meet Me in St. Louis over at the theater. I may have lost my mind, because I really want to go audition. See, the thing is, next semester I'll have that 8AM class, so that will suck. Also, with Chemistry, Physics, Calculus, and an online course, I'll have a good bit of out-of-class work. And then there's tutoring.

So, I'm thinking... it would be kidna nuts if I did it. But I still want to! So... I might. And I have to decide by tonight, ack.

Checkup from the neck-up. I'll take one please
So, I heard about DailyLit, a website that sends you daily emails of bite-sized chunks of books. The theory being that you always check your email, but you never get to read as much as you want to.

I decided to start with Charles Dickens' A Tale of Two Cities, because my Western Civ. class just finished the unit dominated by the French Revolution and I've had it on the brain. (My current experience with the book involves a Jack Russel Terrier in a costume, hah.)

So, I start reading the first bit of a literary classic. Famous opening: "It was the best of times, it was the worst of times . . ."

And what is my first though?

"SEMICOLONS. THOSE SHOULD ALL BE SEMICOLONS. AAAAAGH."

Wait wait, and that Newtons * meters... and that's joules... energy! and I've got a formula. HAH.
I registered for an 8AM Calculus II class this morning. I died a little inside.

It's strange to think that I've got one month left in this semester, and then one more semester and I'll be done with my Associate's degree. And then I'll be going off to another college. Most likely it will be the University of Alabama-Huntsville. I've also applied to Auburn University, although I haven't been accepted yet. Auburn's a good school, but (for those not acquainted with Alabama) it's essentially one of the default college choices around here. So I'd kind of like to do something different.

I've always been considering Georgia Tech as well, but I haven't applied yet. Mostly I don't know if it's worth paying $50 to apply when I'm reasonably settled on UAH. I suppose I should go to Atlanta sometime and visit to make sure. Of course, out-of-state tuition is a big strike against that one. And (usually) I like the idea of being not-too-far away (Huntsville is 45min)--although every now and then the idea of getting away from it all is tempting, haha.

So now it's time to work on scholarship applications. I'll get the letter of recommendation from my Chem teacher tomorrow, and then one from my tutoring coordinator later this week. One more and I ought to be set. Then it's essay and statement time. Because I don't have enough to do as it is, right?

If I don't get a scholarship with a 4.0 and a few solid letters of recommendation and a decent "educational/career goals statement," there is no justice. College is expensive, ok?

So, all year in my Physics class, the instructor has been giving us some example problems using big numbers like the universal gravitational constant, the mass of the earth, etc. And we've never used one on anything that's ever been graded, until an escape velocity problem showed up on our test today. I was pissed, right? Because I didn't put the formula he worked out on the board one day onto my formula card. But I think I got the right answer anyway, HAH. I hope I aced it--it would be sweet vindication to have figured out all of the trick questions.

Spike Spiegel Method of iPod Repair
Random happy thing today:

This morning I plugged my iPod into my computer to update and transfer new music. And then the computer decides not to recognize it. So, I unplug, plug it back in, and try again.

Then I get the sad iPod icon. Uh-oh. But then it flashes the battery icon at me so I figure maybe it just needs to charge.

I get home, and it's still flashing the battery icon while connected to the computer; while connected to a wall socket it just gives me the sad iPod.

Really uh-oh. Apple's "5 R's" of iPod troubleshooting are no help, because, surprise!, it's stuff I know to do, right? So I google and find an old digg article that points to someone's blog entry about how they had a dead iPod and they fixed it by... banging it against wall or something.

Yeah, right. But there were also a bunch of comments of people who also had that work.

So... I gave it a good whack on my desk.

Yeah, it's fine now.

Icon Meme
Grabbed from [info]analogwatch

Comment on this post. I will choose seven userpics from your profile and you will explain what they mean and why you are using them. Post this along with your answers in your own journal so others can play along.

- Ahh, good old default icon. The picture is a stylized drawing of Ein, from Cowboy Bebop, which appears on the Vitaminless soundtrack. I was making icons for Brainfuzz! (a long-dead project of [info]abiona's and mine) and came up with this one. It just came to me that "badass" would be a very fitting caption, so I added that in one version. I showed it to [info]abiona and she probably said something to the effect of "Oh my God, YOU HAVE TO USE THAT," so (once I renewed my paid account) it became my new default. I like it; it's amusing and vaguely ironic.

- This one is Captain Locke from the awesome webcomic Ozy and Millie. Locke is a pirate from the Land Beneath the Couch Cushions and happens to age in reverse. If I recall correctly, in this scene he was trying to incite some kind of rebellion and was placated with cookies. So it fits nicely for a cute/goofy icon.

- Gourry Gabriev of Slayers and a poem that I heard about from [info]abiona, which she found a copy of stuck in a book or something. The poem amused me and, hey, who better to use in a moron icon that Gourry?

- Here we have Spike Spiegel from Cowboy Bebop. The picture is from some kind of promotional art (an artbook, most likely), which has the cast of the series looking at something from an odd viewpoint. Very suitable for a ".....what?" icon.

- Vash the Stampede from Trigun. This one is a little different, because I've never actually seen Trigun (except for maybe 3 episodes or so). But way (way) back when I was first starting out on LJ and decided to change my icons from the random brown-haired character I had found, this one one of the ones I made. So instead of starting with a character I liked, I was looking specifically for a "happy" icon.

- Back when I used to play Ragnarok Online with several people ([info]abiona, [info]shoten, [info]splurgegirl, [info]aeromancy, [info]redaingel, [info]xmidnightx and others, at various times), I spent some time following around [info]aeromancy's battle Priestess, Auster. Auster was helpful, but she didn't take crap from big scary monsters nor fragile little mages. So when I finally got around to making a RO icon, I figured Auster slapping Silvermask around for a 3620 crit hit was appropriate.

- Himura Kenshin from Rurouni Kenshin. Another one that, when it was originally made, I had not seen the series the character came from. But I liked the image I found, and thought it would make a good pissed off icon. Since then I have seen Kenshin, and of course Kenshin is an awesome enough character that I'd want to use him as an icon anyway.

All the icons I have uploaded right now are ones that I've "made" myself. Though someday I should follow [info]abiona's cue and make some icons of stuff that I've actually photographed. Or find some better pictures of myself, haha.

Special Fun Week
What a week! Spent an awesome week at the beach, and then what do I come home to? Tests on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. That's just a special kind of fun. So I spent a significant amount of time studying.

Physics test (which is the only one I knew about before I left) was fairly intimidating because I had no classes before the test--but when I actually took it, I was surprised that it was easier than I had been thinking, and I made a 97. Yay! It would have been 100 if I had not, of all things, subtracted wrong. Oy! Still, that's not bad, since each question was worth nearly 8.5 points. Go go partial credit.

Chemistry test was inhumanly long and included a couple cruel and unusual questions with diagrams labeled A-D and then answers labeled things like "A. B B. D C. B D. A" But it wasn't really that bad--not as difficult as the first test (and only on one chapter). Just long. Class usually runs 11AM until 12:15 (or 12:20 or...) and then on Wednesdays lab is at 1PM. We didn't have lab on Wednesday because we were still taking the test at one. I think I did pretty well though.

Western Civ. required a lot of studying since I was pretty well behind on my study guide questions so I had a good four or five pages worth of stuff I ended up writing out. But the test itself was easy (finally) and I think I did fine (especially considering I have a tendency to score over 100 on most of the tests in that class).

Thursday night through Saturday were very nice, because I had nothing school-related to do. Well, that is to say, I didn't do it. Last night, on the other hand, I spent doing 7 assignments for my online Lit course. It's not like they're hard--50 or 75 words each (of course I always end up with more...)--but most weeks we only have 3 or 4.

Anyway, that's done.

My check for my second month of tutoring should come out to be something like $130 (while my first one was $32 due to the date I started and the date they do payroll). Yay!

Dear World,

I really don't have time to be sick this week, ok?

---

At least this is just a sore throat and other head-cold-type stuff and not weekend-long fever like the last time I had something. Maybe it will be short-lived and won't end up with going to the doctor. I can only hope.

The good news: A week from now I'll be on the beach.

The bad news: The day I get back I've got a bunch of mini-assignments due for my online Literature course, meaning I've got to do them all this week before I go. I've also got an essay I have to write and submit before we leave (but I can't start it until Tuesday) and a test that I have to take the morning we leave (Friday). In addition to, you know, normal classes--including a test on Monday. Now usually a Chemistry test wouldn't bother me too much, but this one has a pretty wide range of material and I know I need to review some more stuff for it. Except my brain is about as useful as mush right now.

Speaking of tests, I got an 86 on my first Physics test--yes, my first college B. It seems really sad to be saying that; I'm not that much of an overachiever, I promise. Ok, maybe I am. It doesn't bother me, except that it was because I made 3 careless mistakes, and otherwise I would have had 100.

I'm going to try and do something productive now, I think.

Good Things
Today has been pretty neat, so far.

First: a haircut, which I badly needed

Second: stopping at the computer repair shop after the haircut and finding a good, name-brand power supply for less that I thought I would have to pay. A power supply that appears to have fixed my problem. And after this last week, that's thrilling.

Third: After two years, I'm finally done with braces. Totally the highlight of the week.

Things to do this weekend:
- continue downloading and reinstalling things, now that I know I won't be reformatting again
- Literature (I'm glad we're finally past the Southern Plantation Slave Dialect Period, so' nuff.)
- Chemistry (Test Wednesday, probably.)
- Physics (Test Tuesday, boo.)
- Clean up

Everyone's favorite yearly activity.
You know, it's intensely frustrating to try and burn a DVD when your computer is randomly rebooting.

Yes, it's that time again! I'm performing that cherished and much-loved task of backing up and reformatting my computer. Because I was bored; because it's fun; because technology sucks.

It started innocently enough: over the last couple months or so, I started noticing that my computer would reboot sometimes when I was playing FFXI. Annoying? Quite. But not catastrophic. I'd had the problem before with and old cheapo video card, so I assumed it was just a driver problem. But then updating my drivers didn't help at all.

It started getting worse, happening more frequently. And then once or twice it happened from the desktop. So I started thinking of other things, particularly overheating. But I don't think that's the problem, since (after re-installing the Intel monitoring program) it seemed just as apt to reboot at temperatures of 115 as 160.

Swapping video cards made it worse (of course, I did only have the crappy old one), swapping each RAM stick one by one didn't help. One old harddrive worked, but Windows had expired without activation. Another one would constantly reboot before it would load, but worked fine once I reinstalled windows on it. And after I reinstalled on the old harddrive, I couldn't get it to reboot.

So my best guess is that it is some kind of software problem after all which for some reason is triggering my computer to reboot instead of doing something logical like bluescreen and give me an error. (BSOD is turned on, naturally.)

It also could be a harddrive problem, I guess, but if it is I'd have to back everything up anyway.

So now I keep backing up and hope I don't miss anything important. At least this time I've learned to back up my music files to my iPod, and not try to get them out of the iPod's library later.

Avoiding My Homework
I'm actually employed now. How shocking! I'm a tutor for the TRiO program at school, meaning... well, I'm not actually sure what that stands for. Also or formerly known as Student Support Services, anyway.

With my class schedule I can only tutor from about 2:30 to 5:00, three days a week, but it's better than nothing, certainly. And considering I do actually need some time to study for my classes, I think that will work out just about right. I've already met two of the guys I'll be tutoring, and I think it's going to be enjoyable. Right now it looks like I'll mostly be working in music, math, English, and maybe a little bit of history.

Moving on to another shocking development, I've started regular exercise again. Or, well, I will have by the time I stop updating LJ. It's been probably a year and a half since I last went to the gym semi-regularly, and it's high time I started again. I've even got a regular time in my schedule: Monday and Wednesday morning before my 11AM class.

In the morning! I must be serious about this?

I should really be doing homework, but then again, what else is new?

Camera update:
I bought a Nikon D40. It's sexy! Only lens I've got right now is the 18-55mm kit lens, but it's quite good and I have my eye on a 55-200mm VR (Vibration Reduction) lens when I've got some spare cash. Nikon has a fantastic 18-200mm VR, but I don't exactly have $800 to drop on a lens. :p

Registered for next semester:
Organic Chemistry I - M/W 11AM (Lab: W 1PM)
Western Civilization II - T/Th 9:10AM
Physics w/Calculus I - T/Th 11AM (Lab: Th 1PM)
American Literature II - Online

One of these days I'll have a semester without registration glitches. At first it was telling me I didn't have the prerequisite of Trigonometry to take Physics w/Cal, when the very reason I'm taking Calculus over the summer is for Physics in the fall. I would have really been in trouble if it hadn't been a mistake they needed to fix.

14 credit hours--not bad. And I'll be tutoring too, finally. I signed up to be a tutor after last fall, but they never really needed me. But now that several of their tutors have graduated, I think they'll have room for me. Not to mention I'll be eligible to tutor for a lot more classes.

Calculus II is going to be a pain, though. The only time it's listed in the course schedule for 2007-2008 is Summer Mini II at 7:15AM. The 7:15 AM is bad enough, not to mention it would mean I wouldn't be able to graduate until August. But, I've been told by some other students that there is a missprint in the course schedule and that it's being offered in the Spring, which would be at 8AM every day. Which is better than 7AM. That would mess with some of my plans a little, but it might be better than dragging things out another three months, so we'll see.

I've been having the urge to get into shape lately. I don't know where I'm going to find the time or energy to exercise, but I really know that I should, heh.
